Heritage & Significance
Dominating the southern edge of the town center, Gregory Lake is a scenic, man-made reservoir that has served as a central recreational space for Nuwara Eliya since the British colonial era. The lake was constructed in 1873 under the direction of British Governor Sir William Gregory, who ordered a swampy stream to be dammed to create a water feature for boating, fishing, and water sports, transforming the town into a fully functional holiday resort.
