Heritage & Significance
Occupying a high-altitude plateau between 2,100 and 2,300 meters above sea level, Horton Plains National Park is a wild forest sanctuary characterized by montane grasslands and cloud forests. This unique ecosystem, often drenched in mist and rain, serves as a critical watershed for the island's major rivers and provides a home to endemic wildlife, including large herds of Sri Lankan sambar deer, purple-faced langurs, and the elusive Sri Lankan leopard.
