Heritage & Significance
The spiritual anchor of Anuradhapura, the Jaya Sri Maha Bodhi is the oldest historically documented, human-planted tree in the entire world. Plented in 288 BC under the patronage of King Devanampiya Tissa, this sacred southern branch of the historical Bodhi tree (Ficus religiosa) under which Gautama Buddha attained supreme enlightenment in Bodh Gaya, India, was brought to Sri Lanka by Theri Sangamitta, the daughter of Emperor Ashoka the Great. For nearly 2,300 years, through foreign invasions, internal civil wars, and shifting capital cities, the tree has been continuously guarded and cared for by an unbroken lineage of dedicated Buddhist monks and royal caretakers.
