Heritage & Significance
Minneriya National Park is a vibrant wilderness sanctuary dominated by the ancient Minneriya Tank, a massive man-made reservoir built by King Mahasen in the 3rd century AD. While the park is home to a diverse array of wildlife—including Sri Lankan leopards, sloth bears, spotted deer, and large flocks of painted storks and cormorants—it is globally celebrated for a singular, breathtaking ecological phenomenon known simply as "The Gathering."
