Heritage & Significance
Rising out of the jungle canopy like a colossal natural altar, the Sigiriya Rock Fortress is one of the world's most spectacular examples of ancient urban design. This 200-meter-high granite monolith was transformed into an impenetrable royal citadel by King Kashyapa during his brief, turbulent reign from 477 to 495 AD. Fearing retribution after seizing the throne from his father and exiling his brother, Kashyapa abandoned the traditional capital of Anuradhapura to construct a lavish, highly secure palace in the sky.
