Heritage & Significance
Spanning a vast area of protected wilderness along the southeastern coast, Yala National Park is Sri Lanka's most famous and dynamic wildlife sanctuary. While the park is divided into five distinct blocks, Block 1 (known historically as the Palatupana side) is the primary focus for wildlife enthusiasts due to its unique geography and high concentration of large mammals. Yala Block 1 is globally celebrated for holding one of the highest concentrated densities of wild leopards (Panthera pardus kotiya) on earth. Because these apex predators have been protected here for generations and have no natural competitors, they are remarkably bold, frequently allowing travelers in open 4x4 safaris to observe them from a close distance.
